2 told they’re lousy burglars
Two men were slapped last Tuesday with a 10-year and seven-year prison term, respectively, for a total of 12 burglaries involving business establishments on Saipan.
Steven Hasugulgam, 23, pleaded guilty to eight counts of burglary in seven cases, while Irwin Duane Teregeyo, 19, pleaded guilty to four counts of burglary in four cases.
Superior Court Associate Judge Kenneth L. Govendo sentenced Hasugulgam to a total of 24 years imprisonment, all suspended except for 10 years.
Govendo sentenced Teregeyo to a total of 15 years imprisonment, all suspended except for seven years.
Both were given credit for time served.
Hasugulgam shall be released from prison on Dec. 28, 2028, where he has been in custody since Dec. 28, 2018. Teregeyo shall be released from prison on Dec. 29, 2018; he has been in custody since Dec. 29, 2018.
The two will become eligible for parole after serving a third of their sentences.
After completing their prison terms, the two will be placed on 10 years of probation.
Govendo told the two that they are still young and should rethink their careers as burglars.
“You guys are lousy, lousy burglars!” Govendo told the defendants.
The judge advised Hasugulgam and Teregeyo to rethink their career paths and try working instead once they get out of prison.
Govendo ordered the defendants to pay restitution to True Value Hardware in Garapan in the amount of $734; I Love Saipan Pop-Up Store in Chalan Laulau, $1,750; Blue Sky Market in San Antonio, $7,825; Pena House Boutique in Chalan Kanoa, $971; Surf Club in Chalan Kanoa, $2,234; Todd Morgan, $100; and Mario Blasquillo, $150.
In addition, Hasugulgam was ordered to pay restitution to Bank of Saipan in Garapan in the amount of $6,639; Delta Management Inc. that operates Shell Gas Station in Susupe, $1,936; Surf Club, $5,324; and Arnold Pascua, $300.
Govendo ordered the defendants to stay away from the victims, including Marianas Eye Institute in Garapan and Saipan Vegas in Chalan Laulau, during their probation.
The defendants were ordered to each pay a $100 fine, plus court costs and probation fee. They were required to complete 200 hours of community work service.
Oliver Manglona and Kimberlyn King-Hinds appeared as counsel for Hasugulgam and Teregeyo, respectively.
According to the factual basis of the plea agreements, Hasugulgam and Teregeyo burglarized the True Value Hardware and the I Love Saipan Pop-Up Store on Dec. 27, 2018.
The defendants burglarized the Pena House Boutique and Blue Sky Market on Dec. 10 and 14, 2018, respectively.
On Nov. 4, 2018, they burglarized the Surf Club.
On Nov. 19 and Dec. 10, 2018, Hasugulgam burglarized the Shell gas station and Bank of Saipan, respectively.
On Dec. 24, 2018, Hasugulgam burglarized Surf Club.
As part of the plea agreements, assistant attorney general Heather P. Barcinas moved to dismiss the remaining counts of the cases. Barcinas agreed not to file any criminal charges in two other police cases.
The prosecutor also agreed not to revoke the probation of Teregeyo in all his juvenile matters. Govendo granted the motions.
