Rescue teams safely secured two Korean tourists who drifted outside the cliff line after scuba-diving at Grotto dive spot in Marpi on Monday.

The victims, a 33-year-old man and a 31-year-old woman, were not injured, but were taken to the Commonwealth Healthcare Center for treatment and observation.

Department of Public Safety spokesman Jason Tarkong said that on Monday at 11:11am, DPS Central received a report about overdue divers at Grotto dive spot.

Police Sgt. Tomas Blas responded to the location and learned from the Grotto parking lot security guard and from the dive instructor of Y2K Dive Company that two scuba divers went missing during their dive.

Blas activated the Boating Safety Section rescue boat Zodiac 3, while the Department of Fire and Emergency Medical Services also launched their Search and Rescue Unit along with Homeland Security Emergency Management.

HSEM then contacted the U.S. Coast Guard.

Tarkong said rescue teams were coordinated to search along the cliff line and that one team spotted the two missing divers floating and drifting northeast of Grotto outside the cliff line.

At 12:12pm, Boating Safety officers Fred Sato, Jimmy Sablan, and Stanley Patris helped secure the two divers into the Zodiac 3 rescue boat.

The divers were transported to Smiling Cove, where they were subsequently brought to CHC.

The report did not mention how long the divers drifted into open water.
