2 Japanese sisters missing
Water, surface, aerial search ongoing as inflatable raft not accounted for
Two Japanese sisters have been reported missing after they failed to appear at their scheduled departure on Monday and their rental car was found parked at Wing Beach.
As of yesterday afternoon, Department of Public Safety police officers and firefighters were still searching for the tourists—ages 28 and 33. The U.S. Coast Guard is assisting DPS via an aerial search, according to DPS police spokesman Travis Hurst.
Hurst did not release the names of the victims at this time.
The police spokesman said surface crews were still searching the surrounding area of Mariana Resort and Spa and Wing Beach.
If needed, Hurst said, a surface dive will be conducted off the shore this morning, Wednesday.
“There is evidence that the two victims had an inflatable raft in their possession and such raft has not yet been accounted for,” he disclosed.
Mariana Resort notified DPS about the missing tourists yesterday at 10:31am.
The tourists reportedly arrived on Saipan on Saturday morning. They were scheduled to depart on Monday, June 30, at 6am.
Hurst said it has been confirmed with the airline that the two sisters did not check in for their scheduled departure.
The sisters were staying at Mariana Resort and were last spotted by hotel staff in the parking lot on Sunday afternoon beside their rental car.
Hurst said this rental car was found parked at Wing Beach, just north of the resort yesterday morning. A KSPN 2 report yesterday stated that the missing tourists’ belongings were still inside the vehicle.
The car rental company alerted the Mariana Resort when the car was not properly returned on its due date. Mariana Resort then notified DPS.
