2 earthquakes hit near Anatahan

Two earthquakes with preliminary magnitudes of 5.0 and 5.7 on the Richter scale hit near Anatahan Island on Saturday, Feb. 28, at 2:24am and 2:45am respectively, according to the CNMI Homeland Security and Emergency Management.

Both earthquakes were located at latitude 17.001N, 145.835E and 16.918N, 145.838E of Anatahan. This is about 64 kilometers (40 miles) north-northeast of Anatahan, 188 km (117 miles) north of Saipan, Northern Mariana Islands.

Both events did not prompt a tsunami watch or warning for the entire CNMI.

In a bulletin, the CNMI Homeland Security and Emergency Management said it will continue to monitor the situation and will be issuing necessary bulletins as soon as it becomes available. The public is being urged to continue to monitor the official bulletin, which will be available through local media sources or contact the CNMI dispatch center at 237-8000 for more information.
