Accompanying the group of enthusiastic 16- and 17-year-olds on their first school trip to Saipan is school principal Shigeto Kitatani and eight teachers.
For many of the students, this will not only be their first overseas travel but is also a great opportunity to meet the people of Saipan and learn more about their customs and culture, plus a chance to use the English they have been learning in school over the past five years.
On their first day, the students will visit the American Memorial Park and watch a short film, before visiting Suicide Cliff and Bird Island Lookout. The school’s first visit to Saipan coincides with the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II, a fact not lost on the school as the students will present not only a memorial wreath and paper cranes at Banzai Cliff, but will also offer prayers for world peace.
The second day will enable the students to enjoy various marine activities and experience the beauty of Managaha Island. The Ikueinishi Junior & Senior High School is located in Nara Prefecture, which is surrounded by mountains, so this will be a rare opportunity for many of the students to participate in activities such as swimming, banana boat rides, parasailing, and snorkeling.
The final day will see the students enjoying a cultural exchange with students and teachers at Mount Carmel School’s Culture Day. Throughout the day students will be able to communicate using English, and learn about one another’s culture through games, sports, and various performances.
Though this will be a relatively short trip for the students and teachers of Ikueinishi Junior & Senior High School, it is hoped that through the relationships created with students and teachers of Mount Carmel School, this trip will become an annual event that will continue for years to come. (PR)
