The Department of Cultural and Community Affairs, through its Commonwealth Council for Arts and Culture, would like to invite everyone to the first Saibok Cookout on July 3, starting at 6:30pm, at the Garapan Fishing Base.

Saibok means to “cook in coconut milk” and is a popular Chamorro way of cooking a dish.

CCAC organizer Fay McMahon said the contest is open to professionals or non-professionals who are ready to take on the challenge.

Only five slots are available for challengers and three winners will be chosen. First prize is $200, second prize is $150, and third prize is $100.

For more information about the Saibok Cookout, call McMahon at 483-1236 and CCAC at 322-9982.

The contest seeks to put the community together, preserve cultural heritage, and promote patriotism.

Concert

The CCAC also had an initial meeting last June 2 on the revival of the Kantan Isla Concert. The event is set to be staged on Aug. 25, from 6pm to 11pm at the Civic Center in Susupe.

“We are reviving Kantan Isla for the younger generation. The concert was under the Chamorro Carolinian Language Policy Commission before. The objective then is still the objective now and that is the promotion of our music, language and culture,” said CCAC director Parker Yobei.

Kantan Isla Concert will be purely music, concentrating on singers. The concert hopes to highlight local musicians.

“We wanted something that is strictly for the performing artists, to entice the kids to get back to expressing themselves through singing and performing original music,” added Yobei.

“The Kantan Isla Concert is a gathering of all local musicians. This year all music will be played on stage and sang in the indigenous languages: Chamorro and Carolinian. It is also a program that aims to develop and encourage the younger generations to share their indigenous original compositions and tell their stories through music,” said CCAC coordinator Gloriana Teuira.

The initial meeting was attended by arts and culture leaders on Saipan and more information about the concert will be released in the coming weeks.
