ROTA—Nineteen trolling boats mostly from Guam participated in the two-day Bud Light Luta Fishing Derby on Rota over the weekend.

Associate Justice Perry B. Inos and former lieutenant governor Diego Benavente and their crew were the two participants from Saipan. Three other participants were from Rota and the rest were from Guam.

As of press time, Saipan Tribune was still waiting for the official results.

15th Rota Municipal Council chair George Ogo Hocog, who organized the derby, said the event has four categories—marlin, wahoo, yellow fin, and bonita tuna.

Hocog noted that there’s not much catch as the waters were rough.

As of Saturday at noon, Rota’s Fullcount II boat was leading in the marlin category with a 102-lb billfish catch.

In the marlin category, the prize for the top winner was $2,000 cash, while $600 and $400 for the second and third place, respectively.

In the wahoo category, first place was a round-trip ticket (United Airlines) from Rota, Saipan, Guam to Japan, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Manila. Second prize was $300 cash and $200 cash for third place.

In the yellow fin category (big-eye), first place was $400, second place was $300, and $200 for third place.

In the bonita tuna category, first place was $250, second was $150, and third place was $100.

The derby started on Friday and ended up on Saturday. The awarding ceremony was held during fiesta celebration on Saturday night at the fiesta ground at the Chamorro Village Park in Songsong.

Hocog thanked the derby’s sponsors—Budweiser, Marianas Visitors Authority, IT&E, Docomo Pacific, Bank of Guam, Ambros Inc., United Airlines, Rota Mayor’s Office, the 15th Rota Municipal Council, Rota Legislative Delegation, and several government agencies.
