The Commonwealth Election Commission is reminding registered voters who will be off-island or away from the CNMI during the early voting period and on Nov. 8 general elections that this Friday is the deadline to request for absentee voting by electronic/mail.

CEC executive director Kayla S. Igitol also disclosed that, as of yesterday, a total of 1,668 voters have requested for absentee ballots and 1,542 have already been mailed.

Igitol said they have been reviewing 126 requests and the absentee ballots will be sent out today, Wednesday.

“My message to the voters is get your absentee requests or come down to our office if you are leaving before early voting and request for an over-the-counter ballot,” she said.

To apply for absentee voting, voters just need to visit the CEC website and fill out the absentee request form.

“The link is there also in our website,” Igitol said.

Igitol said they check the applicants if they’re still registered and if they are registered off-island.

“There’s a process that goes through and then the files are manually pulled out their registration and attached to their application,” she said.

The executive director said they have not encountered any problem with processing requests for absentee ballots.

CEC started accepting request for absentee ballots last Aug. 25.

With respect to early voting for the Northern Islands, Igitol said it’s been slow, but almost close to 70% have already voted.

Early voting for Northern Islands, which started last Sept. 23, will end on Nov. 7.
