A total of 140 took part in last Saturday’s 15th Annual SOPHIA Walk/Run that had participants negotiate a leisurely stroll from Fiesta Resort & Spa Saipan to the Saipan Gold Beach Hotel and back.

Organized by the Marianas Walking Association and Fiesta Resort & Spa, the event is one of fun and friendship with added benefits of good health and physical fitness.

Registration was free but walkers could pay $7 to get a commemorative T-shirt. SOPHIA is the acronym for Saipan Outdoor Physical Healthy Invigorating Activity.

There was a good turnout of 115 participants from various companies including 72 Fiesta employees registered to run/walk the 5K distance.

The start/finish lines were at Fiesta Resort. Fiesta volunteers manned the water station and the 5K turning point across Gold Beach Hotel. The Marianas Health Services volunteers were also on site to check blood pressure and blood sugar test for the participants who were interested. Also on site were volunteers from the Commonwealth Cancer Association handing out brochures and pamphlets to educate the community about the disease.

Medals were given to: Oldest Female, former first lady Sophia Tenorio; Youngest Female, Suisa Nishikawa (3 years old); Oldest Male, Nemoto Shuji (76 years old); and Youngest Male, Jim Takeru (7 years old).
