140 attend Lions Club’s free vision screening on Rota

About 140 availed of free eye checkups as well as free reading glasses during a vision screening outreach conducted by Lions Clubs International District 204 on Rota last Sunday, March 23.
Saipan Marianas Lions Club’s Paul Madriaga made a presentation on the different services the Lions Club provides to the community at the vision screening’s venue at the Rota Mayor’s Office conference room.
Madriaga and company were joined in the outreach by members of the Guam Lions Club, namely Art Navarro and Vic Gaza, who helped set up equipment for Sunday’s event. Ali Badilles, meanwhile, assisted volunteers during the eye screening.
Herbie Perez, Lions Club immediate past district governor, also gave a short orientation to attendees and those interested to join the local civic organization.
Estrella Mendiola, wife of the Rota Mayor Melchor Mendiola, served lunch to the Lions Club members and volunteers.
After the vision screening, Madriaga said leftover reading glasses and eye health literature were turned over to Julian Calvo.
Madriaga also stayed on Rota until Monday afternoon to collect the application forms from those interested in joining the Lions Club.
“We came up with 35 names and we have already 21 filled application forms, enough to charter the Rota Marianas Lions Club. Right now, we are waiting for others to pay the $30 charter fee,” he said.
Madriaga also thanked everyone who made last Sunday’s vision screening a success.
“In behalf of the District 204, our sincere appreciation to the Rota people especially to Mayor Melchor Mendiola, Tommy Mendiola, Julian Calvo, Alejandro Badilles, Estrella Mendiola, Jessica Calvo, Jimmy Apatang, Romy Yalung, and Tina Atalig.”
The Rota Marianas Lions Club will complete the Marianas family of Lions Clubs in the district, which includes Guam, Saipan, Tinian, and Rota.
