The Public School System’s first day of classes for this school year yesterday saw 14 CNMI students being named winners of raffle prizes in PSS’ COVID-19 vaccination campaign, “Vaccination for Education.”

Seven students each won $500 cash prizes. They were Casey Chambers from Saipan International School; Janna Mapeso from Tinian; Rosalia Agbayani from Rota; Ysharei Sanje from Dandan Middle School; and Judy Bang, Kassandra Oropesa, and Rheeza Lopez, who are all from Marianas High School.

Seven top-of-the-line smartphones—four Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultras and three iPhone 12 Pro Maxes—were also up for grabs in the raffle. The four Samsung winners were Mark Cao from Saipan International School; Edgard Acollador II from Tinian; Aiden Masga from Rota; and Zyron Espiritu Santo from Kagman High School. The three iPhone winners were Samuel Cope from Marianas High School; and Gabriel Baylon and Kilistina Passa from Dandan Middle School. The smartphones come with free one-year contracts.

Education Commissioner Dr. Alfred B. Ada said Tuesday that he and a team will be going to the students’ campuses soon to personally hand them the raffle prizes.

To enter the raffle’s selection pool, students who were eligible to receive a COVID-19 vaccine had to submit their COVID-19 vaccination cards to their respective school’s registrar before noon Aug. 17. Ada spun a virtual wheel on Tuesday afternoon to select the winners.

The number of students in the raffle selection pool and the number of students who submitted their COVID-19 vaccination cards to their school registrars were not immediately learned as of press time Wednesday.

Students being vaccinated against COVID-19 is not required but is highly encouraged.
