The Ol’Aces Sports Club-organized 2016 Co-ed Thanksgiving Spike Fest kicked off last Monday at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium with 14 teams vying for the championship.

Kensington leads the entry list in the double-elimination tournament as it fielded three teams in the competition. They are Kensington Wifi, Krazy Kensington, and Kensington Bump and Grind. Bieber, Set to Kill, Lemay, Just 4 Fun, Block Magic, the Ultimate Mix, Sets on the Beach, Talaabwogh Starz, DFS, Served Hot, and Team Go-Rule completed the field.

Served Hot and Team Go-Rule drew byes in the first round to leave the 12 other teams to battle for slots to the second. DFS got a spot to Round 2 in the winner’s bracket and arranged a duel against Served Hot after sweeping Kensington Wifi, 25-18, 25-18.

Sets on the Beach also needed only two sets to top Krazy Kensington, 25-14, 25-21, and earn the right to face the Talaabwogh Starz, which prevailed against Kensington Bump and Grind, 25-19, 21-25, 15-12.

In other first round results, The Ultimate Mix outclassed Block Magic in the first set, 25-17, and completed the sweep by winning the extending second, 27-25. The Ultimate Mix was scheduled to play Lemat last Wednesday night. Lemat went through the distance against Just 4 Fun in their first round meeting. A 25-22 victory in the first set moved Lemat closer to the second round, but Just 4 Fun battled back with a tough 25-23 win to force a deciding third, which Lemat took, 15-10.

Set to Kill completed the qualifier in Round 2 of the winner’s bracket after downing Bieber, 25-13, 25-19.

In the loser’s bracket, Block Magic was scheduled to duel Just 4 Fun with the winner to remain in contention and the loser to get the early boot in the weeklong tournament. The other pairing in the loser’s bracket was Krazy Kensington and Kensington Bump and Grind, while Bieber and Kensington Wifi are still waiting for their respective opponents.
