14 boxes of books donated to DYS
The Department of Youth Services received on Saturday book donations that will be used by detainees at the juvenile detention facility of the Department of Corrections.
Fourteen boxes of books were delivered to the DYS office in Tanapag.
According to Youth Services administrator Vivian Sablan, the program was originally made possible through their collaboration with the Public School System. Members of the AmeriCorps from Gregorio T. Camacho Elementary School and Hopwood Jr. High School led the book drive.
“I would like to thank the AmeriCorps program for helping us,” Sablan said, “We would like to thank you for these resources and we would like to continue working together. We’re all in here for the same population and we hope to expand what we have to help the kids out.”
“We hope that, with these books, our youths can make good use of them,” GTC site supervisor for AmeriCorps Yoly dela Cruz said.
New and used books donated include some fiction novels, chapter books, encyclopedia for the youth, reading materials from the school, fitness books as well as how-to guides.
Books will be screened prior to turning them over to the Department of Corrections.
“We don’t want our numbers to be high over there but we have that obligation to make sure that we have programs running. This is part of the educational component,” Sablan said.
Dela Cruz commended her members for their efforts.
“We worked so hard to get our flyers out. [Jenny Sablan] actually posted all the flyers around the island and luckily we also have Hopwood Jr. High School, Ms. Jackie Echon, helping us. All this collection is actually a collaboration between Hopwood and GTC,” Dela Cruz said.
