GUAM—United Airlines announced yesterday the winners of its 13th Annual United Plane Pull “Towing the Line to Save Lives” on Saturday, Oct. 13, 2018, at the United hangar in Tiyan.
Forty teams registered. This year’s event raised close to $25,000, which directly and equally benefitted the American Cancer Society and Guam Cancer Care.
The annual Plane Pull event, which is organized and sponsored by United employees, has attracted more than 11,000 participants throughout the past 13 years and has raised more than $340,000 for local charities.
Sam Shinohara, United’s managing director of airport operations Asia/Pacific said, “The Plane Pull brings the best of our community together to raise funds for the fight against cancer. I’d like to thank each of the 40 teams who came out strong in support of our Cancer Warriors and Survivors, American Cancer Society and Guam Cancer Care. Four teams—GTA, Docomo Pacific, TanHoldings and Dewitt—have supported the Plane Pull event for all 13 years. The Plane Pull continues to grow through the generosity and commitment of our island community and the nearly 1,000 United employees who organize this incredible event.”
Teams of 25 members each competed to pull a United Boeing 737 aircraft—129 feet long, 41 feet high and 124 feet wide, weighing a total of 141,000 lbs—12 feet in the fastest time. Two teams claimed the title of 2018 United Plane Pull champion. Leo Palace/Team Chikara won the men’s division and Bank of Guam/Team IFIT took the win in the co-ed division. The Westin Resort Guam/Team Westin earned the 2018 Team Spirit Award.
“We’ve been in this community for 50 years, and we have seen the how this disease devastates families. Plane Pull is the epitome of community: teams cheer on those who are fighting and surviving this disease, remember those who we lost to cancer, and help other teams to be successful as they tow the line,” Shinohara added. “United is proud to be a part of this generous community that places great value in supporting the American Cancer Society’s search for a cure and Guam Cancer Care’s programs that help local families.” (PR)
