110 concrete poles arrive

Bringing the number of concrete poles aiding in typhoon recovery to 200, another 110 concrete poles arrived at the Port of Saipan last Saturday morning, according acting Commonwealth Utilities Corp. executive director John Riegel yesterday.

Two hundred were originally ordered for CUC. The first 90 concrete poles arrived on Aug. 22.

Riegel told Saipan Tribune on Friday that the first batch of poles had been installed.

Weather conditions and the closure of the port had delayed the first set of 90 poles by a week.

Riegel did not yet know if any of the 110 poles had been installed, saying CUC crews were unloading them Saturday morning.

FEMA federal coordinating officer Stephen DeBlasio said Friday they are flying in another 150 wooden poles.

Meantime, power is back to the local hospital after a “wiring anomaly” caused it to go off the grid last week. Riegel said this was due equipment at the hospital not being properly grounded. CUC went in to inspect this last week.
