Over 1,000 veterans from the CNMI will be honored with veterans from the U.S. mainland and current members of the U.S. military and their families, as the CNMI marks Veterans Week and the Military Families Month.
Acting governor Victor B. Hocog signed two proclamations yesterday declaring Nov. 6 to 11 as CNMI Veterans Week and November 2017 as Military Families Month. Both proclamations honor current and former U.S. military servicemen.
“…I humbly extend our sincere appreciation to all our veterans for their dedication and hard work for the time that [they] were [at the frontlines] trying to protect our freedom and restore our democracy throughout the nation,” said Hocog, adding that he and Gov. Ralph DLG Torres share the same sentiment.
Veterans of Foreign Wars Saipan Post 3457 commander Brad Ruszala said yesterday the proclamation makes veterans “feel appreciated.”
“[The proclamation] is just something that makes us proud and appreciated, which is something we never ask for. It makes us feel pretty special when things like this happens,” he said.
Ruszala added that anybody who serves the country do not “sign up for the recognition.”
According to Veteran’s Affairs Office executive director Oscar Torres, the proclamation recognizes veterans’ efforts and “it is equally fitting to recognize [the families] as well.”
CNMI Veterans Week spans from Nov. 6 to 11, 2017.
