Rep. Ray Yumul (R-Saipan) introduced a bill yesterday that extends by another 365 days or one year the period in which the Commonwealth Healthcare Corp. and the governor would decide which offices will be transferred from the former Department of Public Health to the Office of the Governor.

The original law that created the corporation gave a 365-day extension for transition.

But Yumul said another 365-day extension is warranted, because this will give CHC time to better structure itself to providing critical health services and decide which offices it can really absorb.

The former DPH became a corporation effective Oct. 1, 2011. On Dec. 29, Gov. Benigno R. Fitial signed an executive order placing the Medicaid Office under the Office of the Governor, instead of being under CHC.

This plan takes effect 60 days after the Dec. 29 submission to the Legislature, unless specifically modified or disapproved by a majority of the members of each house of the Legislature.
