Schedule set for Bud Cup, WBL openers
All is set for the start of the 4th Annual Budweiser Cup BANMI Men’s Basketball League and the return of the BANMI Women’s Basketball League.
This according to BANMI vice president Elias Rangamar, who disclosed Thursday that four games will be played today at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.
Having the honors of kicking off the season are the Ol’Aces and the Garapan Rollers in the Women’s cage league, with tip off scheduled for 2pm.
Following the bout is a battle between Southern and the Saipan Southern High School Lady Rays, with their game scheduled to begin at 4pm.
The men will get their turn on the court as the CNMI Men’s National Team faces four-time United Filipino Organization league champion Samahang Ilokano at Pangasinense at 6pm. The national team is coached by Rufino Aguon, who guided SIP in their title run in the recent UFO league and last year’s MDX cage league.
Closing out the evening is a battle of champions as three-time defending champion Ol’Aces faces 2005 Inter-Government Basketball League champion No Zone at 8pm.
Other teams eager to see action in the league are 2006 IGBL pennant champion Tinian and an All Star selection sponsored by Microl-Toyota.
Games are to be played on weekends. Regular season and playoff schedules were being finalized as of press time. However, Rangamar said the season should come to a close in early June.
The leagues are used as venues for the two national teams to prep for the upcoming 6th Micronesian Games, which will be held on Saipan from June 23 to July 2.
