Saints claim third place in IVYBL

The H.O.M. Saints closed their season on a high note Thursday evening as the CTSI-backed team bagged third place in the 2006 Island-wide Village Youth Basketball League with a 50-41 victory over the Chalan Kanoa Kings.
The game featured a scoring duel between scoring champion Luizi Reyes of the Saints and the Kings’ Edward Salito, who also finished the regular season among the top scorers in the league.
Reyes got off on the right foot and got solid support from the league’s third top scorer, teammate Zack Tudela, as the two cagers were able to score six points apiece to push the Saints to a 12-8 lead at the end of the opening period.
The Saints’ one-two punch continued to provide the team with solid numbers in the second quarter, while Salito took credit for all baskets scored by the Kings, accounting for eight points. The Saints, however, were a bit too strong and increased their advantage to seven points, 23-16.
Salito picked up where he left off after the break and again scored all seven Kings’ points. Despite Salito’s effort, the Saints were still able to pad their lead as Reyes continued to get solid support resulting in the Saints taking a 36-23 lead heading into the final eight minutes of play.
Reyes continued to show his stuff, but it was Salito who took control as he worked his way for 10 points, and got some help from Scott Blewett and Mike Camacho to allow the Kings to outscore the Saints. The effort came a bit too late though and Reyes and company were able to finish as the third-best team in the league.
Reyes and Tudela led the Saints with 22 and 15 points, while Salito topped all scorers to lead the Kings with 29 points.
The 2006 IVYBL title was scheduled for yesterday evening, with pennant champion San Antonio Sixers I battling No. 2 Garapan Rollers I. Results were not available as of press time.
