The 2011-2012 season of the Marianas Interscholastic Sports Organization Boys Basketball League will kick off on Jan. 9 at the Marianas High School Gymnasium.
Five teams are entered both in the junior varsity and varsity divisions. The varsity division is made up of the MHS Dolphins, the Grace Christian Academy Eagles, the Mount Carmel School Knights, Saipan Southern High School Manta Rays and the defending champion Kagman High School Ayuyus. The junior varsity teams include MHS, GCA, Southern, Kagman, and the Saipan International School Geckos.
Opening day starts with MHS and GCA squaring off in the junior varsity division at 4pm, followed by the varsity game between Southern and Mt. Carmel.
The regular season of both divisions will have a double-round robin format.
All games will be held at the MHS gym with junior varsity matches tipping off, for the most part, on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 4pm and the varsity games starting 10 minutes after the first tiffs.
Then the league’s double-elimination post-season tournament is scheduled on March 9 and 10 with Tinian High School getting an automatic fourth-seed in the bracket if the visiting team makes it over to Saipan.
Last season, Kagman defeated Southern in the finals, 82-67, to go unbeaten in the high school division and notch back-to-back championships. The Ayuyus and Rays also dueled in the 2009-2010 finale with Kagman winning, 48-41.
The junior varsity division only had three teams (MHS, Kagman, and Southern) last season and no playoff games were played.
