New Division of Immigration director Melvin Grey expressed confidence in his Immigration agents, saying they perform their jobs professionally.

Grey, in an interview with the Saipan Tribune, said Immigration officers are experienced personnel who know when to properly execute a search warrant or an arrest warrant.

“Operationally, we’re confident that we’re doing it the right way…not to violate rights,” said the director in response to question about criticisms received by the Division a few years ago.

Labor and Immigration personnel reportedly conducted warrantless raids and warrantless arrests many years ago that led to a number of lawsuits in federal and local courts.

Grey said anybody can file a lawsuit against the division, but people should also look at the lawsuit’s substance.

He said that, even though their agents are doing right, they can still be sued by anybody.

Grey, however, stressed that under his administration he wants to make sure that the agents or investigators would conduct their operations properly and with court-issued warrants.

The director earlier stated that people can expect improved, friendlier, and more efficient services at the Division of Immigration.

Grey vowed that people will see professional Immigration agents and personnel in all regards under his leadership.

“The immigration folks have taken a lot of negative comments in the past. I think it’s largely unfair to them,” he said.
