Tee Ball registration set
While youngsters throughout the CNMI have been busy balling to out on the diamonds for the past few weeks, the next generation of mini-Major Leaguers is about to get started as the Saipan Little League Tee Ball program is looking to capitalize on the success of last year’s inaugural season.
According to Saipan Little League Baseball Association president Mike Borja, the Tee-Ball Program is an extension of the local Little League program and is intended to teach kids between the ages of five and eight-years-old the basics of baseball without the pressures of pitching.
The SLLBA is not wasting any time getting things ready for the second season as they will be holding open registration this Saturday and Sunday from 9am until 11am outside of the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium at the Oleai Sports Complex.
Last year, roughly 100 players between the ages of five and eight years of age from teams with names like the Cubs, the Sluggers, and the Little Braves lined up side by side at American Memorial Park for all of the pomp and circumstance before they tore off in different directions for the start of the regular season.
The league will be getting underway soon and parents looking to get their tykes onto the lineups are urged to get their kids register for the program this weekend. Last year there were only four games and a round-robin tournament before the end of season barbeque so the time to get in is now.
Parents and volunteers are needed to assist with managing the field and providing support for their children, and as a reminder, volunteer coaches need to obtain a police clearance from the Superior Court in order for the league to comply with International Little League Requirements.
Due to the unrelenting heat of the Saipan sun, parents are advised that they are to provide players a water bottle and sun screen. Though no specific dollar amount has been released, league officials said that they request a registration fee for each child to pay for the cost of insurance, awards, and the season ending BBQ.
