Stewart reports on FINA Championships
The cream of Saipan’s crop didn’t take home any medals in the first two days of competition in the 8th FINA World Swimming Championships in Shanghai, China, but Saipan Swim Club star Nina Mosley pulled off some impressive swims in the equally impressive 15,000-seat retractable roof Qi Zhong Stadium.
While all of the details were not available as of press time, SSC head coach Michael Stewart said that he was pleased with the way that Mosley has performed in the opening rounds of the five-day competition against competitors from 128 countries, and she posted three personal best times in her first four heats.
Making the achievement even sweeter is that Mosley is competing in her first major event since beginning her difficult road to recovery that followed her rigorous training regimen that caused her to miss a number of local events with a shoulder injury.
While in China, Mosley is competing in the 50m, 100m, and 200m freestyle, the 50m and 100m butterfly, the 50m and 100m breaststroke, as well as the 50m backstroke and the 100 IM.
Stewart said that his prodigy swam in another three events yesterday and that the final one was the most difficult of them all. From here on out, Mosley will race in one event per day before the closing ceremonies end the competition on Sunday, April 9.
While he remains by Mosley’s side in China, the 2005 Coach of the Year continued to look after his swimmers on Saipan as Stewart sent a workout schedule via email to the team, his Masters tankers, and this weekend’s Tagaman participants.
