‘Rota airport needs runway light system’
Rota senator Paul A. Manglona has called on the Commonwealth Ports Authority to immediately install a lighting system on the Rota runway to ensure improved operations.
Manglona, in a recent letter to then acting CPA executive director Lee Cabrera, said that the airport needs a Medium Intensity Approach Lighting System with Runway Alignment.
“While our ultimate goal is to equip the Rota airport with an Instrument Landing System, I respectfully ask for CPA’s assistance in funding the MALSR during the interim period,” said Manglona.
He did not mention the cost of the equipment.
CPA officials earlier said that an ILS would cost some $3.5 million.
In his letter, the senator said that the lack of a lighting system at the Rota International Airport “causes a number of flights to be cancelled each year due mainly to poor visibility.”
In January this year alone, he said that there were four incidents in which Cape Air was unable to land on Rota.
“This does not include [incidents] where pilots were required to make several attempts because of limited visibility before making a final approach on Rota, thus causing delay and financial loss,” said Manglona.
