Clarification: Marines on Tinian
In the story of Friday, John Ravelo reported that a Marine unit of about 1,000 was set to come to Tinian in 2007. He correctly reported that this date was tentative; however, he also reported that the move would bring some $10 billion to Tinian over the five-year period from 2007 to 2012. This was not accurate.
The entire marine deployment from Okinawa is set to start in 2007 (if negotiations with Japan progress as planned) and will encompass some 6,000 Marines of the 3rd Marine Corps. Most of these Marines are currently destined to wind up on Guam. As previously reported by Governor Fitial, Tinian is expecting a “spillover” of some of these units. We believe that a significant training unit of some 1,000 Marines will relocate to Tinian beginning sometime in 2007, but the bulk of all the units, and thus the bulk of the money, will probably wind up in Guam.
In any respect, Tinian is set to welcome aboard whatever groups wish to come here and we will actively pursue such involvement that will ultimately benefit all of the CNMI.
