Commonwealth Ports Authority executive director Lee Cabrera stepped down from his post effective Monday and is now back at his old position as Saipan seaport manager.

“After much deliberation, Mr. Lee Cabrera, our current executive director, has decided to resume his previous position as Saipan port manager. We are grateful for his dedication and efforts he put toward overall operations at CDA these past months,” said CPA board chair Antonio S. Camacho in an April 1, 2006 memorandum.

Cabrera was appointed to the top post following the retirement last December of CPA executive director Carlos H. Salas.

Sources said the re-assignment was “a personal decision” by Cabrera.

Cabrera reportedly informed the CPA board about the matter during its meeting on Feb. 28.

“As usual, we are confident that he will continue to nurture projects at the port of Saipan,” said Camacho.

Appointed as acting CPA executive director is Reno Celis, a deputy director for operations.

“Mr. Celis has relevant background and will work with CPA department heads to ensure that daily functions are uninterrupted,” said the board chair.

He said this delegation will remain in effect until a new executive director is designated.

The board will reportedly put out an advertisement in the U.S. to look for a new executive director who has “20 to 30 years experience in airport management.”
