Only a couple of weeks remain before Saipan’s multi-sport mavens challenge an international crowd of professional and amateur triathletes for the wooden Tagaman trophy, and organizers have altered the course a bit to showcase one of the CNMI’s most famous spots.

Hours spent in the water, on the roads, and in the gym will soon prove their importance to the more than 200 endurance aficionados expected to compete, and organizers have added a little distance to the bike course to reunite the riders with the Grotto Loop.

Last year Olympian Olivier Marceau rocketed around the lengthy bike course from the Pacific Islands Club to Bird Island, Bonzai Cliff, and back to the Hyatt, but this time around he will get to visit the newly reshaped Grotto Loop.

Due to the sea water dripping off of the tanks and gear from the local dive companies, the condition of the Grotto Loop had deteriorated to the point that the riders would have been put at risk had famed loop been added.

Once the transition to the run at Micro Beach, the triathletes will run south to the Microl Toyota turnaround and back to the American Memorial Park. Last year they had to run out to the pier’s outermost finger and to the horn in Puerto Rico, but this year the finger portion has been omitted from the course.

While the racers will be pushing their bodies to the limit on Saturday, April 1, and Saturday, April 8, they have to act fast. According to Taga Inc. vice president Wolf Mojica, racers entering the 17th Annual Tagaman Triathlon need to hurry as the final deadline is closing fast. Applications are available at the MVA headquarters in San Jose, and will soon be available to world via internet at www.tagaman.com.

In the meantime, Team Unlimited, Taga Inc., and the Marianas Visitors Authority have been working round the clock to host the multisport enthusiasts from throughout the region for April’s XTERRA Saipan Championship and Tagaman Triathlon.
