OPA holds off Legislature in govt caging
The cagers of the Office of the Public Auditor put on a show in the third quarter, then had just enough juice to hold off the determined Legislature Lawmakers for a 93-85 victory in the ongoing 2006 Inter-Government Basketball League Monday at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.
After keeping pace with Dave Sablan and his Legislature crew in the opening period, 23-23, the OPA ballers were able to streak ahead as Jeff Quitugua headed a 24-point attack with nine points while the team limited OPA to 18 points for a 47-41 lead at the break.
The game remained in OPA’s favor as Everly Pangilinan and Juan Camacho combined for 13 points to lead a well-balanced charge that resulted in another 28 points added to OPA’s corner. While OPA was cruising, Legislature was struggling as the team was held to 17 points and trailed, 75-58, with one quarter left in regulation.
OPA had a tough task closing out the bout as Sablan and Ray Duenas ignited and fueled a surge that brought the Lawmakers back into contention.
Sablan worked his way for 14 points and Duenas put the rock through the hoop for nine points, however, Legislature’s 27-18 run was not enough as Quitugua scored 12 points in the final minutes to keep his team ahead.
Quitugua led OPA with 30 points, while Chris Camacho and Robert Torres pumped in 14 and 12 points. Pangilinan and Juan Camacho also finished in double figures with 11 and 10 points as OPA improved its win-loss record to 3-6.
Sablan had a game-high 41 points, while Duenas supported him with 18 points for the Lawmakers, who also hold a 3-6 record.
Meanwhile, Northern Marianas College Proa won by default over the Customs Inspectors. The win was NMC’s sixth in 10 games.
