AMP eyed for upcoming Liberation Day
The extensive grounds of the American Memorial Park may be the next site of the Liberation Day festivities this June, according to Saipan Mayor Juan B. Tudela.
Tudela said during the fifth Liberation Day Committee meeting held recently that their request to use the original site eyed, the Garapan Fishing Base, has yet to be granted by the Department of Public Lands.
The mayor said he would still have to follow up with acting Public Lands Secretary John Del Rosario next week to finalize the venue for the yearly celebration.
This year’s committee chairman, Tony LG. Cabrera, said the group would have to meet with AMP site manager Chuck Sayon to discuss the possibility of transferring the venue to the park’s grounds.
The committee is also considering the Sabalu Market grounds in Susupe for the Liberation Day carnival and fair.
The Liberation Day committee is now on its 5th weekly meeting to beef up plans for a more successful Liberation Day festivity this year. The committee chair also said the celebration this year would be bigger because it would be the 60th anniversary of the Liberation of Camp Susupe.
Past queens, grand marshals, former marshals, and mayors will be included in the July 4th celebration. Suggested theme for this year is “Liberasion Taotao Marianas,” which will be printed in three languages—Chamorro, Carolinian, and English.
This year’s committee is composed of Cabrera, vice chair Joseph C. Reyes, secretary Angie F. Sablan, treasurer David Attao; queens, Laila Y. Boyer; hospitality and dignitaries, Alice Fleming; solicitations, Joe C. Reyes; and public relations and publicity, Reina C. Camacho.
Other committee chairs are: transportation and logistics chair Frank Tudela; float, parade and utilities chair Larry I. Guerrero; Military and Veterans Affairs special assistant Martin C. Sablan; traffic safety and security Sgt. Joe Flores; site permit and clearance chair Alfredo I. Guerrero; site and grounds layout chair Lars Palacios; concessions chair Mona T. Rebuenog; entertainment chair Joe Limes; and beautification chair Rick Taisacan.
The committee will still have to appoint chairpersons for the carnival rides and amusement, as well as for the fireworks committee.
