The Board of Education is reviewing its guidelines on the fundraising activities of public schools after a number of parents complained that the practice is being abused by several parent and teachers associations.

BOE board member Herman T. Guerrero said during a board meeting last week that several parents have come up to him and brought up the issue about certain PTAs abusing the funds that are collected from these fundraising activities.

Guerrero told the board that three such associations, which he did not name, are allegedly “abusing” the money by not fully accounting for the funds that are raised.

These complaints are not new to the school system, said Guerrero, adding that incidents like these have occurred a few years back and some are recurring again this school year.

Guerrero asked the Public School System’s legal counsel about the matter and was initially told that schools are entitled to do such activities on their own.

“We want to make sure that the money is being accounted for, that the parents are aware of it,” said Guerrero.

The board member reminded the schools and PSS that, if there really are abuses going on that they are aware of, then it must be stopped and all money being raised must all be accounted for accordingly.

The board agreed that the schools’ fundraising activities should be investigated and audited immediately because the names of the public schools are used for these events.

Among the fundraising activities conducted by schools include hot lunches, car wash, and garage sale, among many others. These fundraising activities aim to collect additional funds for the schools’ several academic events such as off-island educational excursions and many more.
