Motorists driving through Beach Road who wonder when the repainting and reassigning of the lanes will be completed will have to remain patient until August this year.

That is the expected completion date of the ongoing “Beach Road Highway Hazard Elimination” project, according to project Department of Public Works’ contractor Maeda Pacific Corp. president Thomas J. Nielsen.

“Commuters will have to remain patient until then,” he said.

The project starts from Garapan all the way to Koblerville and includes new traffic signs, repainting of the lane markers, a sidewalk for pedestrians, and a turning lane.

The project, which costs around $999,000, intends to provide a safer and more convenient highway for daily commuters, said Nielsen. “It will be much better than before.”

There were at least 15 trees that were cut down for the project, including those along Beach Road across the San Jose highway. These trees, according to the contractor, had to be sacrificed to widen up the road leading to the stoplight. Nielsen said the road is now safer for motorists in this area.

There was only one turning lane constructed for this project, said Nielsen, and that is at the intersection of Beach Road and Quartermaster Road. Finishing touches are being done to sidewalks along Beach Road near the Saipan World Resort, to provide safer lanes for pedestrians.
