Doi Tenorio sets score to beat
Ed “Doi” Tenorio humbled an 18-man field to post the lowest score in the Refaluwasch Golf Association’s March Ace of the Month qualifying round held last Saturday at the Coral Ocean Point golf course.
The former director of the Office of Management and Budget tamed the greens and fairways with a net score of 66. The 14-handicapper went 39 in the front and 41 in the back and finished with a gross score of 80.
Two strokes back of Tenorio were 2003 Suva South Pacific Games coach Nick Sablan and Bill “Mr. Slicer” Kaipat, who both wound up with identical 68s. Kaipat however managed to nip Sablan in a scorecard tiebreak to finish as the runner-up.
Kaipat fired a 41 in the front and 39 in the back, but had his gross score of 80 deducted by his 12 handicap. Sablan, for his part, shot a gross of 73 and had that cut by five strokes.
In solo third place was Louie Tilipao, who came away with a net score of 69 after going 42 in the front and the same score in the back for a gross of 84. Tilipao sports a 15 handicap.
The rest of the golfers that participated in the swing-off were RGA president Jess Wabol (71), February Ace of the Month winner Gus Camacho (70 net), Joe Wabol (72), Richard Pierce (72), Lou Peliseman (73), John Mettao (73), Sasaki Oliver (75), newcomer John Tagabuel (76), Carlos Salas (77), Adam Hardwick (77), Joey Arriola (77), Tony Satur (78), Joe “Kamikaze” Camacho (80), and Mario Taitano (85).
In the closest to the pin competition, Kaipat took hole No. 3, while Kamikaze won hole No. 14.
Jess Wabol reminded local duffers that the best ball tournament being organized to serve as a fundraiser for the men’s and women’s team to the 6th Micronesian Games would be held this Saturday, March 11, at the COP. Check in time is set at 10am with tee off expected at 11:30am.
