GTC school rules recycling contest
Twenty-three public and private schools gathered last Wednesday at the Basula Produkto office in Tanapag to finally receive their cash rewards from the 2005 America Recycles Day trash collection competition last November.
The annual environmental competition spearheaded by the Department of Public Works Solid Waste Management Division was held in collaboration with private company Basula Produkto.
The schools had to collect recyclable materials and wastes in their schools from October to November last year, to be converted into cash.
Gregorio T. Camacho Elementary School ruled over the other schools with a total collection of $370.55. Kagman Elementary School followed with the most number of trash collected, with $312.01 cash equivalent. San Vicente Elementary School ranked third, with a total of $257.70.
Other schools that participated in the contest were: Grace Christian Academy, Mt. Carmel School, Brilliant Star School, Tanapag Elementary School, Sister Remedios School, Whispering Palms School, San Antonio Elementary School, Koblerville Elementary School, Saipan Southern High School, Oleai Elementary School, Dandan Elementary School, and Northern Marianas Academy.
Garapan Elementary School, Saipan Community School, Chacha Oceanview Junior High School, Hopwood Junior High School, Saipan International School, Eucon International, William S. Reyes School and Golden Harvest International.
Basula Produkto president Eric Cruz handed the checks to school representatives during the awarding ceremony. DPW acting Secretary Jose Demapan was also present during the ceremony.
Demapan also presented a certificate of appreciation to Basula Produkto for its support of the recycling contest.
Basula Produkto’s Cruz said he was overwhelmed with the success of the competition. “We hope that the CNMI community would continue to support the competition,” he said.
All school participants received at least $10 or more, based on the trash they collected during the competition.
