Back-to-back games with the second and third place teams proved to be all that was needed to get the first slot in the Women’s Island-Wide Slow-Pitch Softball League finals, as the Hitters scored a pair of victories over Mix-A-Lot to win the best-of-three semifinals to advance to the championship stage.

After rallying from a 5-2 deficit in the bottom of the fifth inning to eke out a narrow 6-5 win in the opener, the Hitters erupted to score 14 runs off of 18 hits in the second game to clinch the series, 14-4, Tuesday night at the Tan Ge Softball Field.

A number of role players stepped up to make the bid for the finals, and they put in the time on the field, from the dugout, and at the plate to earn the championship date.

Emy Quitugua was perfect in the first game with a flawless 3-for-3 performance at the plate that yielded a pair of singles and a triple, and she continued her smack-fest with three singles and four ribbies during a 3-for-4 outing in the clincher to finish 6-for-7 overall.

The Hitters’ big hitter wasn’t the only one welding the whacking stick as second baseman Yui Smus went 5-for-7 in the series with five singles and three runs scored, while slugging shortstop Thelma Mizer went 2-for-3 in the opener with a pair of singles, and leftfielder Rose Taman came to play with a solid 3-for-4 appearance and two runs batted in during the clincher.

The Hitters now await the conclusion of the game between first place Bomsoro and the fourth place It’s Okay tonight at Tan Ge. The all-star-laden Bomsoro squad holds a 1-0 advantage in the best-of-three series after topping Lucy Aldan and company, 15-10, on Tuesday night.

After making a statement with an 8-0 run in the first inning, Bomsoro let It’s Okay creep back into the game before slamming the door shut on the win with a four-run burst in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Action continues tonight at 6:30pm as the purple powers of It’s Okay looks to even the series under the lights at the Oleai Sports Complex. Game 3 will follow immediately thereafter, if necessary.
