‘Car in fatal crash was speeding, not drag racing’
The car that crashed in Marpi, killing the teenaged driver and injuring her three passengers, was not involved in drag racing, according to a traffic officer yesterday.
Sgt. Anthony Macaranas, in a telephone interview with the Saipan Tribune, said the traffic reports did not mention that the white Mazda sedan driven by the 19-year-old female was engaged in racing.
Macaranas said he would neither confirm nor deny talks that there was a drag racing in Marpi that night.
Macaranas also stated that as of Friday, he verified at the Commonwealth Health Center that the other passenger who was taken in the intensive care unit, was still under observation but on stable condition.
Police said taken to ICU was a 19-year-old local girl who suffered internal injuries.
The Saipan Tribune learned that the fatality was 19-year-old Sabra Camacho of San Roque. She sustained massive head injuries and was pronounced dead at CHC.
Police said the two other passengers, a 16-year-old girl and a 21-year-old man, suffered minor injuries and were released at CHC after being treated.
Traffic officers indicated that the driver was speeding and that alcohol was not the factor of the accident.
Police said that on Thursday at 10:18pm, police were notified of a car accident near the Marianas Resort in Marpi.
Investigation showed that a white Mazda sedan was traveling in a south direction and veered off the roadway. The car hit a couple of trees before it slammed into a concrete retaining wall.
The weather was clear and the road surface was dry when the accident happened, police said.
