A female tourist nearly drowned while swimming on Managaha Island on Saturday afternoon.

The Saipan Tribune learned from police that the 62-year-old Korean tourist was swimming with her husband in the northern portion of Managaha when big waves struck.

The victim was hit by the waves that caused her to swallow a lot of water. She was transported by speedboat to Smiling Cove Marina.

The Department of Public’s Safety’s emergency medical technicians immediately responded to Smiling Cove Marina where they waited for a few minutes for the boat carrying the victim to come.

Boating safety officers also waited at the Smiling Cove. When the boat arrived at 2:45pm the victim was observed unconscious.

EMTs assisted the victim before they transported her to the Commonwealth Health Center, where she was placed under observation.

Boating safety officers told the Saipan Tribune that the victim appeared to be fine.

That day, the Emergency Management Office issued an advisory, cautioning beachgoers, divers, fishermen, swimmers, and marine tour operators of Saipan, Tinian, and Rota, to continue avoiding venturing near exposed reefs and beaches until the surf subsides.

On Feb. 17, 2006, a Chinese tourist drowned while swimming at Tachogna Beach in San Jose, Tinian.

The companions carried the victim to the beachside and tried to revive him. Police were then called.

Responding police and emergency medical technicians tried to revive the victim, but he was already dead.

A Tinian officer said at that time, the water was choppy and that the EMO even issued a hazardous surf advisory.(Ferdie de la Torre)
