Nineteen young lawyers from Japan arrived yesterday afternoon on Saipan to learn more about the CNMI’s judicial system.

Members of Seiryu-Wakate-kai, based in Nagoya, Japan, are expected to tour the Judicial Complex in Susupe and meet the members and officers of the CNMI Bar Association today.

Seiryu-Wakate-kai is a group of lawyers who have worked less than 10 years after their registration to the Aichi Bar Association. The group tours foreign countries every other year to visit courts and exchange opinions with local lawyers.

Attorney Suzuki Takaomi, secretary of the group, informed Superior Court Presiding Judge Robert C. Naraja about their intention to learn about the local trial proceedings so they would know the difference compared with Japan’s judicial system.

“By understanding the system of both countries, we are sure we could improve ourselves as lawyers,” said Takaomi in a letter to Naraja.

Associate Judge Juan T. Lizama will lead the local court’s presentation for the visiting Japanese lawyers in his courtroom today at 2:30pm.

Lizama, who is coordinating the tour program, said it is Seiryu-Wakate-kai’s first visit and that the judiciary is happy that the group has chosen Saipan for its tour.
