Northern Marianas College president Tony V. Deleon Guerrero welcomed yesterday the four new members of the Board of Regents, which will convene for the first time tomorrow.

Newly appointed board members Agnes McPhetres, former Commissioner of Education Rita H. Inos, Jay Jones and Linsa F. Lizama will attend their first NMC BOR meeting tomorrow afternoon at the BOR Conference Room.

Deleon Guerrero said that the NMC community is grateful and appreciative of Gov. Benigno R. Fitial and Lt. Gov. Tim Villagomez’s prompt action to fill the vacant slots at the NMC Board of Regents. He said he is looking forward to working “collaboratively with them [new regents], along with our three ongoing regents.”

“I would like to cultivate a cooperative working relationship with our BOR members, NMC Foundation, and our internal NMC stakeholders, and we enjoin the new BOR members in developing a shared vision of excellence, expanding and increasing our institutional resources, and building college-wide commitment and engagement in meeting WASC accreditation standards,” he said.

With the new team members onboard, the college president is hoping to explore new ideas and strategies in enhancing NMC, especially its role as a community resource center for the Commonwealth, and improve its overall institutional effectiveness.

Deleon Guerrero also cited former regents Maggie Olopai-Taitano, Galvin Deleon Guerrero, Abbie Cing-Cabrera, and Jose “Pito” Sablan for their contributions to the college.

NMC is governed by a seven-member BOR appointed by the CNMI governor, with the advice and consent of the Senate. The authority of the board is derived from the CNMI Constitution and statutes. The board is responsible for ensuring that the college accomplishes its mission in providing quality educational programs and services to the CNMI community.
