A tourist drowned while swimming at the Tachogna Beach in San Jose, Tinian on Friday night, the Saipan Tribune learned yesterday.

Tinian Department of Public Safety said the victim, a 36-year-old Chinese man, was pronounced dead that night and that his body was transported to the Commonwealth Health Center on Saipan.

Police said they received a call of possible drowning at Tachogna Beach at 6pm. When they got there, the victim had already been brought by his companions to the beachside.

Preliminary investigation showed that the victim and his companions—a man and a woman—had gone swimming at the beach. Later, one of the companions noticed that the victim was missing. The two began searching for the victim, whom they later found floating.

The companions carried the victim to the beachside and tried to revive him. Police were then called.

Responding police and emergency medical technicians tried to revive the victim, but he was already dead.

A Tinian officer said the water was choppy at that time and that the Emergency Management Office even issued a hazardous surf advisory.

This is the first drowning incident on Tinian and CNMI this year.

EMO announced yesterday that a high surf and small craft advisory remains in effect on Saipan, Tinian, and Rota.

Fitial advised fishermen, beachgoers, divers, swimmers, and marine tour operators in the Commonwealth to continue avoiding exposed reefs and beaches until the surf subsides.

EMO said that based on the information received from the National Weather Service in Guam, large waves resulting from fresh to strong trade winds would create hazardous surf across the Marianas.

The surf would gradually build through midweek, EMO said.
