COMMUNITY BRIEFS
MIX PLATE BAND AT GIG TONIGHT
A high-intensity party explodes tonight at Saipan’s premier party place, GIG Discotheque. Aptly billed “Presidents’ Day Prelude,” it will feature the grand prize winner of the 2005 Liberation Day Battle of the Band, Mix Plate.
Highly-regarded as the best band on Saipan as far as island music is concerned, it will feature on lead vocals Chris and Ray Kaipat, who will be belting out your favorite island rhythms together with the Mix Plate. Doors will open at 9pm.
Playing the hottest party tracks in between breaks is the lone female Mixmaster in the Pacific known in the Club scene as Darkstar a.k.a. DJ Susan.
MARCH 4 CLEANUP AT COP
The Division of Environmental Quality’s cleanup brigade will be at it again, picking up trash at Coral Ocean Point beach.
Individuals who would like to volunteer their time to clean up and beautify the island can meet the DEQ representative in the bright green T-shirt on Saturday, March 4, 2006 at 8am.
The brigade cleans until 10am and breaks for drinks and then if continues, if needed.
This month, outstanding brigade volunteers who participated in at least 10 monthly cleanups will receive a brigade cap and those who participated in at least three cleanups will receive a green brigade t-shirt.
Join DEQ’s cleanup brigade and “Pick It Up!”
For more information about volunteering, contact the DEQ office at 664-8500.

IMPORTANT FEBRUARY DATES AT GES
February is gearing up to be a stimulating month at the Garapan Elementary School, full of academic activities that will keep everyone busy.
This month the school emphasizes the MegaSkill of Initiative and the ESLR “Resource Seeker.” February is also Math and Science Awareness Month at GES, so these skills will be all the more useful for its students to learn.
– Feb. 20: President’s Day, No classes
– Feb. 23: PTA meeting @ 6:30pm, cafeteria
In addition to these dates, Boys/Girls soccer tryouts and practice will begin, as well as preparations for the Academic Challenge Bowl. Your child will be busy with President’s Day trivia and Math & Science projects. The 3rd Grade Project Familia lessons will begin for those families involved in learning how to stay strong and healthy. The African American Cultural Preservation Committee will be visiting our school to teach students about Black History. We have entered the DEQ Recycling Contest this month, so if you have any recyclable materials that you’d like to donate in our name, bring it to the transfer station and tell them its for Garapan Elementary School. You can also help us raise much needed funds by eating pizza for Valentine’s Day (25 percent of the profit will go to us) and by clipping BoxTops for your child to turn in. Thank you to Java Joe’s and Pacific Amusement for their Education Tax Credit donations of $2,000 and $5,000.
For more information on any of the above, call the school at 237-3341, or send an email to gomezy@pss.cnmi.mp.
