Families gathered yesterday at the Garapan Fishing Base and enjoyed a whole day of fun and games plus entertainment during the “Family Fun Day,” a fair for families and other members of the community.

The activity was part of the monthlong celebration of “Parents Leadership Month,” with this year’s theme “Family Strengthening Through Parent Leadership.”

Parents brought their children so they could play, watch programs or simply visit the various booths organized by local non-profit organizations and schools.

Department of Community and Cultural Affairs acting Secretary Daisy V. Bier welcomed the families and expressed her appreciation for the parents’ cooperation during the event. Parent Education Program coordinator Felicidad T. Ogumoro also provided welcoming remarks for the parents.

The fair had skit presentations from Kagman Elementary School, Grace Christian Academy, Mount Carmel School, Cha Cha Oceanview Junior High School, Hopwood Junior High School and Marianas High School.

Dan Dan Elementary School, Stellar Marianas, Tekana Hau Nui, Sam Joyner, No Talent Nothings and the CNMI’s very own recording star Amber Mendiola also provided intermission numbers in the afternoon. Division of Youth Services director Debra A. Inos closed the ceremonies.

Parents Leadership Month recognizes that parent leadership is an essential and effective means of strengthening families and preventing child abuse and neglect. The program was created to recognize the extraordinary courage and determination of parents who make efforts to improve the conditions and the relationship within their families as well as the community.
