SSC grows no moss in loss
While the future of the 2006 Micronesian Games is still up in the air, the Saipan Swim Club is continuing to train its waterborne athletes for any would-be challenge this weekend with an in-house meet and a mighty feat.
Two days from now, the SSC will be testing its tadpoles with what head coach Michael Stewart describes as a low-key meet this Saturday, Feb. 18, designed to keep the team in tune.
On Sunday, Feb. 19, the squad will take to the open waters to face a greater challenge, but the stars of the Kan Pacific Swimming Pool will not be alone as the SSC is inviting the public to participate in the Inaugural Meek and Mighty Ocean Swim.
Swimmers will have their choice between taming the waters behind the Pacific Islands Club for the 1,000-meter lap around the Meek course and the five-lap 5,000-m Mighty course around the buoys in the lagoon.
“This first year we will be as informal as ever. We will take official times for records sake, and hope to build on this for the future. So, come on out and have some fun,” said Stewart.
While the coach offered a simple mantra of “no charge, no awards, no shirts, just a great workout,” he said that he would provide color-coded caps to distinguish between the different age groups and distances.
Though there is no charge for the event, and all that the organizers ask is for non-Pacific Islands Club members to meet them on the beach just south of the popular San Antonio playground. Registration for both swims take place bright and early at 7:30am, with the swimmers taking off at 8am.
Participation is not limited to the swimmers; however, as volunteers will be needed to record times and ensure the safety of the strokers atop kayaks.
If you are unable to join the SSC in the water this weekend, there is another opportunity to do so next month as the Saipan Ocean Swim enters its 28th year on March 19. More details and entry form will be made available in the near future.
