Sixers I debut strong in IVYBL
The San Antonio Sixers I sent a strong message to the rest of the teams in the 2006 Island-wide Village Youth Basketball League, as they opened the season with a bang Tuesday night at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.
The defending champions, coached by Ray Duenas, controlled the game from beginning to end en route to a 57-20 victory over the Kings.
The Sixers dominated right from the opening tip, using a balanced scoring attack to drill 18 points while playing tough defense and limiting their opponents to just two points.
The defense continued to hold its ground as the Kings were held to two points again in the second period. San Antonio also struggled and pumped in eight points but posted a 26-4 lead at halftime.
The scoring spree resumed for the Sixers I in the third stanza as Lawrence Echon spearheaded a 20-point explosion. The Kings also showed signs of improvement as they pumped in six points, but were still trailing by a huge margin as they headed into the payoff period down by 36 points, 10-46.
Refusing to give in, the Kings continued to play better and again showed positive signs in the fourth quarter with a 10-point effort.
Novol Pepito led the Sixers I with nine points, while Echon and Matt Duenas supported him with eight points apiece.
Edward Salito paced the Kings with eights points.
