NMC offers chance to study in Hawaii

Northern Marianas College announced that the Undergraduate Mentoring Environmental Biology program is giving Pacific island undergraduates an opportunity to study in field stations and laboratories in Hawaii.
NMC Board of Regents special assistant Mark Mendiola said UMEB is an interdisciplinary program in Environmental Science for students from the Pacific islands and is funded by the National Science Foundation.
“The goal is to train and educate undergraduate students who are permanent residents of the Pacific Islands,” Mendiola said, adding that this opportunity is intended to establish a knowledge base of environmental science and conservation that is provided to the islands of the Pacific.
Mendiola said this would enable students to help in the protection of animals and plants unique to each island so that they may be conserved and enjoyed by the people who live there.
Through UMEB, undergraduate students from the Pacific islands will be invited to join research groups that would conduct their studies both in the field and inside the laboratory.
Mendiola said the application deadline for the program’s Summer 2006 calendar is on March 17. He is inviting all NMC students who are interested in the program to come and apply and have the chance to study in Hawaii.
