Fund selects new lawyer
The NMI Retirement Fund board has selected a new lawyer from its current pool of applicants.
Fund administrator Karl T. Reyes, however, declined to reveal the person’s identity, saying that the person has yet to get an official notice of hiring.
“We don’t know yet if our offer would be accepted so it’s better that it remains confidential,” he said.
Sometime in December last year, the Fund disclosed the board’s selection of Public School System legal counsel Karen Klaver to the post.
But shortly after the announcement, Klaver reconsidered, saying that it was wrong timing to leave her current work.
Meantime, Reyes said the Fund board approved during its meeting last week to hire from the existing pool of applicants rather than issue a new job vacancy.
The Fund earlier published a vacancy for the position.
At least three lawyers, including Klaver, had responded to the announcement.
The Fund offers a maximum of $65,000 annual salary for a legal counsel position.
The Fund has been lacking an in-house lawyer for over two years.
The Fund manages and invests retirement money for members.
It is also administers the health and life insurance programs for government employees and oversees the Workers’ Compensation Commission.
