NMI govt implements recycling program
The administration has ordered all government agencies to implement a recycling program.
In a memorandum, Gov. Benigno R. Fitial directed the Solid Waste Division within the Department of Public Works to install recycling bins throughout government offices under the Executive Branch.
“DPW is directed to install recycling bins at its earliest possible convenience. Once this is done, all department and activity heads under the Executive Branch are directed to immediately implement a recycling program in coordination with the Department of Public Works and relevant government agencies,” Fitial said.
Currently, the government maintains a refuse transfer station in Lower Base that is capable of recycling several types of white paper, newspapers, most telephone books, aluminum cans, clean aluminum foil, clean glass containers without lids or tops, corrugated cardboard, used toner cartridges, and residential household hazardous waste such as used oil, household cleaning supplies, paint, car batteries, or tires.
Items that are not acceptable for recycling include colored or carbon paper, tablet bindings, glossy paper, rubber bands, food wrappings, cups, facial tissue or paper towels, wax paper, containers made of tin, steel or other metal, light bulbs, fluorescent tubes, window glass, cardboard in other forms such as cereal boxes and tablet backs, and commercial hazardous waste such as batteries, used oil chemicals and bio-hazardous waste.
