Swimmers, netters put on a show

Tsunami Swimming Center Saipan’s record-breaking swims, Saipan Swim Club’s high-point wins, and the CNMI tennis players impressive games in Week 2 of the 12th Annual PIC Tennis Championships made headlines last week.
Tsunami Saipan bets crushed seven age groups records with Miku Tammy posting three new marks in the girls 9 to 10 age group, Ryuto Yanai resetting three in the boys U8 and his oldest brother, Kaito, breaking one in the boys 11 to 12 division. Tammy’s three records made last weekend were in the 200m freestyle (2:34.86), 100m backstroke (1:21.49), and 200m individual medley (2:53.17); Ryuto’s came from the 200m freestyle (2:34.63), 100m freestyle (1:15.69), and 50m freestyle (33.04 seconds); and Kaito’s lone record was in the 200m backstroke (2:39.48).
These seven records were posted during the two-day 2012 SSC International Invitational Meet held last weekend at the Kan Pacific Swimming Pool where SSC swimmers also had impressive races, winning four age group contests.
The host club ruled both the girls and boys U8 division with Conatsu Kaga and Taiyo Akimaru besting their respective foes and Lennosuke Suzuki and Kento Akimaru winning the boys 9 to 10 and 11 to 12 categories, respectively.
Other age group top finishers were Tsunami Saipan’s Ryuto Yanai (tied in boys U8), Takumi Sugie (boys 13 to 14), and Shigeki Tenorio and Kensuke Kimura (tied in over 15 age group) and Neveah Anderson of Guam’s Manukai Athletics Club (girls 9 to 10), Danielle Atoigue (girls 11 to 12), and Taloani Atoigue (13 to 14).
In the PIC tennis, Week 2 of the annual competition saw down-to-the-wire finishes in the men’s open singles and mixed open doubles. In the doubles, Thea Minor and Bobby Cruz survived the finale against Tim Quan and Mikayla Lopez, 1-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-4), while in the singles, Todd Montgomery slipped past Cruz 7-5, 2-6, 6-3.
Other Week 2 champions were Dylan Ackerman and Carol Lee (mixed 3.0), Clayton Izuka and Alex Park (boys U12 doubles), Emily Jones and Alina Ishikawa (girls U15 doubles), Julia Ishikawa and Tania Tan (girls U12 doubles), Thea Minor (women’s open), Darrel Roligat (men’s 3.0), Chris Cajigan (men’s 4.0), and Kinumi Taniguchi (women’s 3.0).
Meanwhile, other on-going leagues/competitions on Saipan continued with baseball having the Little League and the Saipan Major League, NMIFA holding the youth, women’s and men’s leagues, and MISO playing fast-pitch softball and soccer games, and kicking off the outrigger canoe racing.
The Mahi Derby was also held last week with My Lady Gora besting 34 other boats with its 26-lb catch.
