First lady shows interest in recycling project

First lady Josie P. Fitial has expressed great interest in getting involved in a community recycling program.
Fitial, who recently met with Philippine former first lady Imelda Marcos in Manila, said recycling was one of the community projects they discussed during their conversation.
Marcos, although infamous over her excessive lifestyle and perceived involvement in her family’s alleged accumulation of illegal wealth, had been credited for initiating many good community projects, including recycling.
“I’m very interested in this project. I want to help in a recycling program here since a lot of things that can still be recycled just go to waste. But to be frank, I don’t know where to start yet,” she said.
Waste disposal and recycling has been a major problem in the Commonwealth.
“We continue to see all these discarded heavy metals, other items that could still be recycled,” she said.
Right now, the government maintains the Refuse Transfer Station in Lower Base that has the capability of recycling certain trash: aluminum, cans, glass bottles and jars, old corrugated cardboard, tires, and scrap metal.
Privately-owned Basula Produkto also runs a trash collection and recycling business in Tanapag.
Mrs. Fitial, whose husband of 22 years was sworn to office as governor a month ago, said she would mainly be in the background but would willingly give her time to be part of worthwhile community projects.
