Mining venture pledges $50K-$100K to PSS
The cash-strapped Public School System may finally get some much-needed funding. That is, if JG Sablan Rock Quarry Inc. and Bridgecreek International Corp. eventually get their project to mine pozzolan from Pagan Island lift off the ground.
Board of Education chair Roman C. Benavente confirmed that representatives and officers of the two companies invited him to a meeting in their office last Friday where they disclosed plans to help the PSS if their planned business venture in the CNMI materializes.
Benavente met with Bridgecreek’s CEO John Carlson and JG Sablan Rock Quarry’s John Sablan.
Benavente said the two expressed their sympathy over the continuing financial constraints experienced by PSS.
Benavente said that Carlson and Sablan had informed him that they are willing to pledge $50,000 to $100,000 to PSS every month if their business pushes through within the year. “They said they want to help on some of the problems of PSS,” said Benavente.
The companies’ officers even told the education board chair that they would open a bank account that would be exclusive to PSS.
Benavente cautioned, however, that, “everything is still premature.”
The board chair said he would still discuss the issue with the rest of the BOE board members in their March meeting. “There will never be a decision until all the board members are notified.”
He added that the board has to be careful with dealings such as this, whether it would benefit the CNMI or not.
Benavente said the meeting wound up with a promise from the private firms that they would call him again for further discussion and for a more concrete plan of action.
