Guam mentoring group honors volunteer aides
TUMON, Guam—Big Brothers Big Sisters of Guam held its annual Appreciation Luncheon on Feb. 7 at the Hyatt Regency Guam, during which it handed out awards to volunteers who have helped it achieve its mission.
BBBSG was also presented during the event with a proclamation designating February 2005 as Mentoring Appreciation and Awareness Month by Guam Gov. Felix Camacho, who spoke of the importance of mentoring for both youth and adults.
Volunteers and donors were recognized for their support of the BBBSG goal to serve 100 youth in 2005.
As BBBSG’s first corporate partner, Citibank was a recipient of the Distinguished Service Award, in recognition for its outstanding support of BBBSG through its Citigroup Volunteer Program, which has resulted in 18 Citibank employees contributing over 140 hours of community service.
Also receiving a Distinguished Service Award was Air Force TSgt Janate Harrison, Andersen AFB 36 CRG. Harrison, who was nominated by her Little Sister Elsie, has been matched since February 2005, and has also assisted with fundraising and recruitment.
Speaking on behalf of Citibank Guam, honorary Big Brother and Citigroup country officer Ajay Kashyap mirrored Camacho’s sentiments and spoke of Citibank’s commitment to community involvement.
“Citibank is a worldwide company, and community involvement is an important part our corporate philosophy” said Kashyap, “It’s very important for all levels of management to be involved and give back to the community.”
The mission of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Guam is to provide quality volunteer and professional mentoring services for children and youth utilizing the support of mentors in one-to-one relationships. BBBSG provided service to 91 children in 2005.
